When Stress Gets in the Way of Learning: What Community Schools Can Teach Us

Practical, resilience-building strategies to help students manage emotions, make positive choices, and build coping skills.

Trauma, stress, and mental health challenges can create real barriers to learning. When those challenges show up in the classroom, educators need ways to respond that support the student in the moment and help them build skills for what comes next.

Join Christian Moore for a practical conversation about meeting students’ emotional and behavioral needs. He’ll share trauma-informed, resilience-building strategies educators can use to help students regulate emotions, make positive choices, and develop coping skills.

Community schools remind us that student success depends on more than what happens during a lesson. Their approach brings together school staff, families, and community partners to address barriers to learning and create the conditions students need to thrive. One important lesson for every school: students’ emotional and behavioral needs are part of their readiness to learn.

What we can learn from the community schools model

The commonly used pillars of community schools include integrated student supports, expanded and enriched learning opportunities, family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership and practices. These pillars work together to support the whole student.

This webinar will spotlight the connection between integrated student supports and the everyday work educators do with students. Services and partnerships matter—and so do the interactions that help a student feel understood, regain a sense of control, and practice a more helpful response when challenges arise.

Whether you work in a community school or simply want better ways to support students who are struggling, you’ll leave with practical ideas to consider in your setting.

In this webinar, you’ll explore how to:

  • Recognize how stress and other challenges can affect students’ ability to engage and learn.
  • Support emotional and behavioral needs with practical, skill-building strategies.
  • Help students regulate emotions, make positive choices, and strengthen coping skills.
  • Use visual metaphors, activities, and counseling tools to make complex life skills easier to remember and apply.

You’ll also learn about free tools and resources available to Mississippi educators that can support this work with students.

Whether you’re a teacher, counselor, social worker, administrator, interventionist, or other education professional, this session is designed to give you practical ideas you can put to work with students immediately.
